Love letter to my dog
I met you when I was a child
in a few of my dreams.
I was six and you were three.
I knew you and you knew me
and that was the most important thing of all time.
There was nothing else.
Just us and the soundest,
sturdiest understanding.
I was me with you.
Then I would wake and you would vanish.
That was my first heartbreak.
I’d cry to my mother because you weren’t real.
I remember wailing.
Years passed and my heart broke tens of more times.
I’ve been ten different people since we last met.
Then one Sunday morning,
I found you in a kennel.
You made your way straight to me
and looked at me like you remembered
when I was six
and when you were three.
Now it’s finally just us again.
I get to live my fondest memory wide awake.
More recently, I had a dream that a strange woman took you from me.
I hunted her
until you were mine again.
As long as we’re both breathing -
there will never be a day
in any dimension
that we don’t have each other.
